Clap Your Hands If You Want Some More

I have to admit I didn't plan on going to see The Pipettes last night. I'd lost interest in them the last few months, and I was also a little sceptical about whether they would put on a good show. Furthermore, I didn't want to go by myself. However, at the last minute I decided to stop being so sooky and get out of the house and do something. To add to this I thought it was important to take a stand against the cynicism others feel towards the band, I don't buy the idea that gimmicks and quality are mutually exclusive. I think I've made myself fairly clear in the past about the perspective I describe as "Kurt-damaged". I don't buy it. Get a life, arseholes.

I arrived at the gig just as the support act Little Red were beginning. From what I have read lately, Little Red are a band going places. Unfortunately, that place is the Mercury Lounge. They're taking four-part harmonies to Triple M, which quite frankly makes them nothing more than Taxiride minus the buff boyband looks.

As soon as I was aware of The Pipettes I was in love with them. I tippexed their name on my pencil-case before I'd even heard a single note. Rose was immediately my favourite Pipette and I've dreamt of marrying her ever since. I managed to scam their demo cd out of their manager by pretending I was some powerful music critic. Even if their music was rubbish I would have still thought they were fantastic. Fortunately, it is not. Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me and Pull Shapes were undeniably two of the best singles of 2006, and the rest of their debut album is consistently good.

It wasn't until the curtain was drawn back that I actually felt excited about seeing them. I have no idea what I was thinking when I thought they wouldn't put on a good show. Being a complete sucker for pretty girls, upbeat pop songs and synchronised dance moves it was obvious that they were going to be amazing. Halfway through their first song my love for them had been reborn. Furthermore, their amusing between song banter was just delightful (with Rose even making a Brass Eye reference, much to my glee).

Highlights were, obviously, Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me and Pull Shapes, as well as Tell Me What You Want, Judy, It Hurts To See You Dance So Well and the encore of We Are The Pipettes. In addition to those pop gems the band played plenty of new material that all sounded wonderful. I had planned to hang around after the show in an attempt to meet Rose and have her fall madly in love with me. Unfortunately, it seemed like many others were having the same idea and I decided it would be impossible for us to get some quality time alone. Despite this it was such a fantastic show that I had the odd experience of going to bed with a smile on my face.
